More On Being Sure Of OSAS

Q. Re: ‘Are you sure about OSAS?‘  As Eve was being tempted by Satan into eating the fruit, he was getting her to think about how it was good for food, pleasant to the eyes, would make one wise. She was thinking about all these things BEFORE she ate of it. If she had walked away, or if Adam had stopped her, she would not have eaten of the fruit. And that’s what God had forbidden them: ‘but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you shall not eat.’ Gen 2:16. It wasn’t forbidden to think about it, but to do it. I accept that Jesus was teaching about changing our hearts when He spoke against even anger. Yet, anger is justifiable many times.   Jesus was  angry at the Pharisees but He didn’t kill any of them.

A. The Pharisees were certain that they were without sin because of their exemplary behavior. It wasn’t until Jesus explained the standards that it became clear they were falling short of the mark.  That’s why the Lord said our righteousness has to surpass theirs or else we will not enter the Kingdom (Matt. 5:20).

I don’t agree with your position on Eve because we don’t know when she actually broke the commandment, we only know when the consequences were made obvious.  She could have been sinning from the moment she began considering it.  And you can’t equate your anger with the Lord’s.  His anger is righteous but ours is not (Ephes. 4:26-27).

Finally, you’re overlooking the fact that a believer’s salvation is guaranteed at the moment of belief before he or she has had time to do anything, good or bad (Ephes. 1:13-14).  Our righteousness is imputed to us by faith and is apart from the Law (Romans 3:21-26).

Are there Degrees Of Sin?

Q. I do not believe God considers all sin to be the same.  I base this on the words of Jesus. He was responding to Pilate who had said, “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” In John 19:11, “Jesus answered,  “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.  Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.”  I realize that any sin, no matter the magnitude by our earthly standards, separates us from God.  We all need salvation through Jesus. Even so, don’t you think that Jesus’ words in John 19:11 means that God does in fact see sin in degrees?

A. Pilate was an unbeliever who didn’t have any idea who Jesus was.  He was acting in ignorance.  But the priests who handed Him over had to know they were putting the Son of God to death.  It was too obvious from their Scriptures for them not to have known.  The sin was the same, but the culpability of the priests was greater.

James 2:10 says he who breaks one point of the Law is as guilty as if he broke all of it. If any violation is equal to all violations there cannot be any degrees of sin.

Is God Using The Weather To Judge Us?

Q. I live near Joplin, MO  where an F5 tornado struck last weekend.  Please help me because I know as I go to Joplin and help with our church I will be asked why God allowed this to happen, and I would like to be able to answer them from God’s word. We don’t know why God allows storms or stops storms or why they hit where they do. But He is in control of them and He sees the big picture and He’s God  who are we to question Him, so basically I feel confused.  Also there are a lot of people saying that when disaster strikes it’s God’s judgment on their sin and if that’s the case wouldn’t all of us need to take cover because we are all sinners?

A. For me this is a simple issue.  There was no bad weather before there was sin.  You can make a circumstantial case from the Bible that it had never even rained on Earth before the Great Flood.  Extreme weather is one of the enduring consequences of that judgment, so if you’re looking for someone to blame don’t blame God.  Blame the one who brought sin into the world and made the judgment necessary.  As far as weather is concerned the only thing God promised is that He would never destroy the Earth by water again (Genesis 9:13-15).

I also don’t think the Bible supports the “God is in control” idea in the universal sense in which most people think of it.  Certainly it’s true that eventually God’s will is going to be accomplished on Earth and in Heaven, but for now the whole world is under the control of the evil one (1 John 5:19).

As for judgment, the Bible says when God uses weather as a tool of judgment men’s hearts will fail them for fear (Luke 21:26) and the hail stones will weigh 100 lbs. each (Rev. 16:21) so you really won’t want to be around when His judgments begin.  Thankfully, God won’t judge the world until He has taken the Church out of the way (1 Thes. 1:10).

One World Government

Q. I’ve heard the bible mentions that the world will one day accept a one-world government. Does that mean that the conspiracy theorists are right to say that the Bilderberg Group / Illuminati will be a global government, and thus the Illuminati was prophesied in Rev 13:3?

A. The fact that there will be a one world government under the control of the anti-Christ is a widely accepted theory among prophecy scholars. And it’s no secret that groups like the ones you mention have been working toward that same end for some time.  Various other religious and secular groups also see a one world government coming.  For example, the New Agers believe their man will rule the world, and Moslems look froward to a world wide Islamic Caliphate, a possibility that I think is the most likely one.  The actual form it takes won’t be revealed  until after the Church is gone.

Will Any Who Sincerely Try Wind Up Failing?

Q. Regarding the Strait Gate, does God allow a person to be deceived by Evil, or to deceive himself by the perversity of his own heart, and so, to miss the Strait Gate and go to Hell? Is it possible that the merciful and omnipotent God will allow a person to want to believe and be saved; pray with the intent to believe and be saved, want to repent and be forgiven, ask for faith to believe and be saved, but still fail to find that gate?

A. In a word, No. Romans 10:13 says that all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved. Matt. 7:7-8 promises that all who seek will find, all who ask will receive, and to all who knock the door will be opened.  And on top of that, 2 Peter 3:9 says that God doesn’t want that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. This tells us everyone who sincerely asks for salvation will receive it.

It’s important to remember that being saved is not a matter of trying to be worthy.  We’re saved because of what we believe, not because of how we behave.  As long as we sincerely believe we’re sinners and the Lord’s death paid the full penalty for all our sins, then as soon ask we ask for it salvation we’ve met the requirement.
